The Presentation of Our Lord and Savior in the
Temple
Reading
When the most pure
Mother and Ever-Virgin Mary's forty days of purification had been
fulfilled, she took her first-born Son to Jerusalem on this, the fortieth
day after His birth, that she might present Him in the temple according to
the Law of Moses, which teaches that every first-born male child be
dedicated to God, and also that she might offer the sacrifice of a pair of
turtle-doves or two young pigeons, as required by the Law (Luke 2:22-24;
Exod. 13:2; Lev. 12:6-8). On this same day, a just and devout man, the
greatly aged Symeon, was also present in the
temple, being guided by the Holy Spirit. For a long time, this man had been
awaiting the salvation of God, and he had been informed by divine
revelation that he would not die until he beheld the Lord's Christ. Thus,
when he beheld Him at that time and took Him up into his aged arms, he gave
glory to God, singing: "Now lettest Thou Thy
servant depart in peace, O Master. . ." And he confessed that he would
close his eyes joyfully, since he had seen the Light of revelation for the
nations and the Glory of Israel (Luke 2:25-32). From ancient times, the
Holy Church has retained this tradition of the churching of the mother and
new-born child on the fortieth day and of the reading of prayers of
purification.
The Apodosis of
the Feast of the Meeting in the Temple is usually on the 9th of February.
This, however, may vary if the Feast falls within the period of the Triodion. Should this occur, the Typicon should be
consulted for specific information concerning the Apodosis of the Feast.

Your birth sanctified a Virgin's womb and properly blessed the hands of

God, give peace to Your commonwealth in troubled times and strengthen those
in authority, whom You love, as only the loving One.

METROPOLIS
OF SAN FRANCISCO PHILOPTOCHOS
Saint
Nectarios Local Chapter Number 4030
A
MESSAGE FROM PHILOPTOCHOS
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
We would like to reiterate about “The House of Ruth”. The
House of Ruth is a non-profit women's shelter providing critical,
life-saving, and supportive services to victims of domestic violence.
They are committed to the fight of ending domestic violence and making
every home a safe home.
This initiative started last December of 2019, we again would like to
continue to assist this wonderful organization by joining them through
our donations in the struggle of protecting these women and children from
their abusers. In addition to the provision of safe shelter, your
donations would also provide these victims of abuse with the opportunity
to begin new lives of productivity within a peaceful and safe environment.
It is the goal of Philoptochos, along with
the assistance provided by the community to be able to continue this program
of philanthropy throughout the year. Let us be reminded by the words
of our Savior, "for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was
thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was
naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison
and you came to Me...I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the
least of these My brethren you did it to Me (Mt. 25: 35-36, 40)."
Our Lord Jesus Christ through our beloved Saint Nectarios,
has blessed all of us so that we in turn may be a blessing to others. As
a community, if all of us can give just one item a month from the wish
list, we will truly be a blessing to these vulnerable women and children.
Please prayerfully consider your involvement in this much needed
charitable endeavor through your generous donations. There will be an
area set up in the hall for donations. We thank all the wonderful and
caring parishioners of St. Nectarios for their
generosity and expression of love for the least of these.
Yours in Christ,
Ladies
of the Saint Nectarios Philoptochos
Society
